In each hidden village there is a ranking system that determines how strong each ninja is. Ninjas are ranked according to their skill level and how well they work under pressure. As they get stronger and improve in their skills, they will go up in their ranks.

Academy Student
The first level in the ranking chain is an academy student. You aren't actually considered a ninja yet until you graduate from this rank. Children enlist as an academy student around the age of nine and usually stays until they've reach age twelve. But sometimes, very talented students graduate at an even younger age. During their time as an academy student, they undergo various training on how to use basic weapons (such as Kunai and Shuriken), execute basic ninja techniques (such as Cloning and Substitution), and the control of chakra. To graduate to the next rank, they take a test by executing one of those techniques. Even if every one of the students complete the test, only nine can move on to the next rank depending on how well they distribute their chakra when performing their technique.

Upon graduation, the students will recieve a special head band with a metal bar bearing the symbol of their village. This "forehead protector" has a special meaning to each student, it rewards them of what they've accomplish and lets everyone else that sees it know that you have graduated. Wearing it gives them a sense of gratitude, but it is just the beginning of their ninja life-style.

Genin
The next rank in line are genins, they are of the lowest level of ninjas. Once a genin, they are assigned to a group of three other genins that is instructed by a jounin. The group is sent on missions that the village gets paid for doing. They are normally sent on genin-ranked missions, which are the lowest rank and generally consists of little or no fighting at all. Some missions include finding lost pets, weeding gardens, and other boring tasks. To move on to the next rank, which is a chuunin, they must go through the chuunin exam. That is where the boring missions and training comes in, it helps them develop their thinking, survival, and combat skills.

Chuunin
Being promoted to a chuunin puts a great load of responsibility over them. Chuunins are qualified to command other ninjas to do activities that contains fighting. Leading the group requires great strategic maneuvers that will accomplish the mission without losing any ninjas. But not all chuunins do the task of leading a group of ninjas on missions, some become teachers (such as Iruka-sensei). Teachers educate academy students on their adventures of becoming a ninja. They teach them the basic skills of ninja physical training.

Specialized Jounin
A jounin that is specialized in one area of training are called specialized jounins. They are elite in their area and usually assigned to regular jounins when their area of skills are needed. Two examples of special jounins are Morino Ibiki and Mitarashi Anko.

Ibiki is head of Konoha's Torture and Interrogation Squad because of his expertise in understanding how the human mind works. He is also in charge of the written test part of the chuunin exam. In the exam, Ibiki puts them through mental training, he finds their weaknesses and brings it out.

Anko, the examiner of the survival test part of the chunnin exam, is specialized in the Hidden Sound Village. Little is known about this village, which is why Anko is specialized in that field. Anko was once Orochimaru's student, which is why she has a wide knowledge of the Hidden Sound Village. She also has Orochimaru's cursed seal, little is known on how she recieved it.

Jounin
Jounins are high ranking ninjas that have shown an enormous amount of intelligence and skill. They are sent on the most dangerous missions that involves a great of deal risk and difficulty. As chuunins teach academy students, jounins are assigned to instruct three-person groups of genins. They guide their teams through missions and prepares them for the chuunin exam. Jounins sometimes teach their own skilled techniques to their genin students depending on how talented they are. Little is known on how chuunins are promoted to jounins.

Kage
Kage, the highest rank of them all, is an ultimate warrior and the strongest in its village. Each village has its own kage and can be only matched against other kages. Although their appearance may distract you, they are tremendously powerful and holds an overwhelming amount of high level techniques. Each hidden village has their own kage: Ho( kage of Hidden Leaf), Mizu (kage of Hidden Mist), Tsuchi (kage of Hidden Rock), Rai (kage of Hidden Cloud), and Kaze (kage of Hidden Sand).
